ive had a freind who rode his 04 crf 250 r like a 2-stroke. he went through TONS of clutches. i would tear it apart and look at the plates to see if its already groving, check the oil level to see if it IS burning oil, and look at the hub for cracks, untimely wearing, or weird stuff. if u used all stock plates and steels, then u shouldnt have to use a heavier spring, unless they are worn out if u still dont find anything, then umight wanna go to hinson clutch components, i know they are expensive, but the durability and the performance are excuisit. if ur kid uses the clutch on his 4 stroke alot, then that is ur problem.
