Question To many classes at local races????

So I was bored and looking at local race results and saw that there are almost 40 different classes run in a race weekend and they all only have a few people in them at most races. It is like they keep making more classes so that everyone has a class they can win in. At these small events why do they break up the age group classes by skill level??? It used to always be that you rode against people your skill in the 250 and 450 classes and people your age in the age classes. And you actually had more than one other person on the line with you. ANd they used to have a cool open class for people who wanted another moto. Now I see that most tracks don't even let pros or beg ride in some of these open classes (which many tracks have further broken down into schoolboy and BTH, 125cc two-stroke ect.). I realize they fill all these classes at the big GFI events and amateur nationals, but the local race scene has lost its flare by adding all these classes.

The best race of the day at one of the local tracks I grew up racing at was the open class. It had a little bit of everyone in it and people got to see the new hot shot 125 Jr kid battle against vet experts, 450 novices, int and pros. It was the class that determined the running order for the fastest people at the track that day. And it was cool to see a novice get a good start once in a while and battle with the local pros.

Oh well, I guess making sure everyone has a class they can bring home a trophy in is more important than just having fun racing against a gate with more than 5 people on the line and racing for the fun of racing no matter who it was against. I have wanted to get back into racing a little at the local level where people still have fun and don't act like it is a business, but I am not sure that really exist anymore?

I totally agree.

Seems to me most of the redundancy is in the youth classes, which is the promotor's bread and butter - so I doubt anything will change.
Join OTHG if you're old enough. It may not be the perfect solution but from my experience, it's as good as it gets at the local level.

Zack-

Glad you brought this up. I too feel that most races have way too many classes. Why break down races by engine size at the local level? How many different age groups do we really need? I love to get out and bang-bars with my buds, but I'm getting old, and sitting through 20+ motos is tough on us old farts. I do race with the OTHG for that reason, and I would like to race more of the local events, but gates with 4 racers?

I'm going to guess this is not the first time this has come up and the promoters are doing all they can to please everyone. If they make changes to please us, someone else will pipe-up with a "Not Enough Classes" thread. I can see it now....

But, I do agree with you, and I'll bet with a few minor changes we can get everyone in a full race without having 20+ motos. If I have to get up at 5am and spend all day at a track just to race, I still will, I just wont like it, and wont do it as often.

Re: To many classes at local races????

I liked the way they did novice at the sat night race at club, there was 4 of us in 450 and like 5 or 6 in 250 so they ran us together on 1 gate, it was cool racing with more people, better than just the 4 450s alone, but there was a lot of little kid classes, they should put them in 1 race but do seperate gates so were not sitting around for 15 minutes while they do 4 laps

Wait, so they ended up puttin g the 250's and 450's in the same class? or just the same gate? and yeah i know what you guys are saying.. it sucks to wait around for hellof motos, thtats why i just sign up for two classes.. the 450 or 250 novice and the bth so that way im constantly getting reaady to race and dont have to wait all that long.
