Dirt Bikes and the Hygiene Hypothesis.

Could dirt bikers actually suffer less from allergies than the general population? Today’s Sacramento Bee addresses an emerging theory that basically says, dirt may be good for you. The “Hygiene Hypothesis” includes the observation that the modern day obsession with cleanliness seems to be associated with an increase in allergic response to natures pollens and dander and dust. The human body has an immune system that is supposed to produce antibodies to fight off infection and germs. The Bee’s front page story claims that “Without important germs against which to wage war, the body's immune system is overreacting to otherwise benign allergens such as pollen and pet dander [and dirt].” What is your experience this spring? Do you sneeze less than your non-dirt biking friends that wash their hands twenty times per day?

I have been riding for 15+ years, and have some shotty allergies! I work with heavy equipment and am constantly around dirt, dust, mud, and it's not making my situation any better. I have been pretty miserable this past week or so.

I eat all organic food, noni juice first thing in the morning, and i didnt get sick once all winter. You would be surprised how much bad stuff is in the foods you buy every single day.

Cool

I eat organic foods in my salads everyday. At Sandhill last weekend I must have sneezed 20-30 times straight a few times. My throat and sinus's were WAY sore up until yesterday from it. That day sucked. Went out and bought a box of Claritin to bring with me for the next dusty, windy race day...

Allergies & Dirt Boogers

You can always tell people who ride MX or dirt bikes; they are usually picking their nose! I guess it's a habit formed by picking dirt boogers caused from sniffing in dust & roost.
