Santa Clara MX update

Hello NorcalMotocross, my name's Shawn, I'm the manager out at Santa Clara MX. I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone on the forum and say thank you to everyone who has stoped by to check the place out. You've all been very supportive. Just a little background on myself for those of you I haven't met. I worked at G.P. Sports in San Jose for 5 years in parts and as the parts manager. When this opertunity came around I couldn't turn it down. And yes this is my 1st time running a track and its definetly been a steep learning curve so far. Good news is myself and the staff are getting leaps and bounds better on the tractor and the track seems to be getting a lot better each week. I definetly want and can use feedback from the riders so please don't hesitate to ask for me at the track, I'm there all day everyday. Or the track hotline that is also my direct line is 408-595-0901. In an effort to keep people from getting bored we are going to try and change one jump or section each weekend. Some people were asking for some more technical stuff so Frank if your reading.. I put in your step-on step off section between the back s turn and backside table. I just finished it late tonight, I think it turned out really really well. Sunday races will start Nov. 19th and I'm pretty sure Dec. 3rd will be round 2. We will have a flyer this week. Thats it for now. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll see you at the track!

This soo awesome. Now you can hear our comments about the track. And possibly be the best track in the bay area.

But I have one minor complaint, in corners the dirt is too marblely off the main line and on the main line ruts don't form that well. Is there anything you can do to fix it? What about woodchips? I haven't been there in to SJMX in like 2-3 weeks because of it. But as you said, you keep on getting better every week. So maybe this isn't a problem anymore.

I will definetly be going weekly once the dirt gets alittle better.

we're working on it

We are trying to dig the dirt deeper and not pack it down as tight in the corners. I think the dirt gets marbly from lack of water. Before we took over it wasn't watered for like a month. it's not perfect yet but defintly better than opening week

Tom I agree totally,,,the key is to be constructive and realistic. If the guy is really trying dont whoop on him when it isnt absolutely perfect. Give him solid ideas without being nasty and I am sure the results will be a ton better. Thanks for giving a poop and hopefully SJMX will become a destination like CM and E street!!

That section was about my only complaint since I didn't know what to do with it. Was anyone clearing this?

Other than that, I have to say that you guys are doing an awesome job. I'm really really impressed.

For improvements, I'm not sure what to add. I mean, even as a beginner it feels a bit too kiddie in some ways. That's good because it's safe, but I guess I would like something that really kicks my butt instead of just slightly kicking my butt - and I'm an old dude. A really good rhythym section or some nice whoops would make me happy. But I can't complain and even it you didn't change a single thing, other than keeping the dirt nice, you're still going to see me a few times a week.

Okay...I thought of one other thing. Weekly, monthly or yearly passes. Seriously.

And more hot babes walking around in bikinis, faning me with giant palm leaves, (just kidding...I think).

Great job Shawn!!!!

Hey Shawn... it's Mike from Club. Sounds like you've got a handle on the marble problem... why it happens that is. And yes, it's mostly due to lack of water. It can also happen because the dirt clods are too big (like baseballs instead of golf balls, or better yet, marble sized) and don't contain enough water molecules in the center of the dirt clods. In other words, the finer you grade the dirt, and the more you water it, the more the dirt will retain moisture in the small dirt chunks, even when it looks dry from the outside. When the smaller dirt clods have mosture in the interior, and a bike runs over them, it will breat apart into tacky dirt and stick, rather than break and roll around like a hard marbles (actually, like riding on golf balls).

That's probably more of a scientific response than you may have been looking for, but I had a good teacher (Kirk). Anyway, I'm no expert, but if you err on the side of more water, all the way across the width of the track, especially the edges where the dry, golf ball sized dirt chunks can build up, and err on the side of more tilling, then your marble problem will lessen, if not eventually be a thing of the past. Your dirt is pretty similar to Club's. And club also had a marble problem after taking it back over from Mutant because it hadn't been tilled or watered properly for some time. But, not anymore, because of lots of water and tilling.

Feel free to call me or Kirk for more info, and thanks for staying on top of things. Nor cal mx is a better place for all with the addition of your track.
