Hey Shawn... it's Mike from Club. Sounds like you've got a handle on the marble problem... why it happens that is. And yes, it's mostly due to lack of water. It can also happen because the dirt clods are too big (like baseballs instead of golf balls, or better yet, marble sized) and don't contain enough water molecules in the center of the dirt clods. In other words, the finer you grade the dirt, and the more you water it, the more the dirt will retain moisture in the small dirt chunks, even when it looks dry from the outside. When the smaller dirt clods have mosture in the interior, and a bike runs over them, it will breat apart into tacky dirt and stick, rather than break and roll around like a hard marbles (actually, like riding on golf balls).
That's probably more of a scientific response than you may have been looking for, but I had a good teacher (Kirk). Anyway, I'm no expert, but if you err on the side of more water, all the way across the width of the track, especially the edges where the dry, golf ball sized dirt chunks can build up, and err on the side of more tilling, then your marble problem will lessen, if not eventually be a thing of the past. Your dirt is pretty similar to Club's. And club also had a marble problem after taking it back over from Mutant because it hadn't been tilled or watered properly for some time. But, not anymore, because of lots of water and tilling.
Feel free to call me or Kirk for more info, and thanks for staying on top of things. Nor cal mx is a better place for all with the addition of your track.
