Talking Dirt....

So I know we've probably covered this subject matter many times in the past, but I was wondering... (and maybe some of the Pros and the track preppers can chime in here)

Why dont more track owners use wood chips or some kind of compost materials in their base dirt on the track?... isnt this suppose to be like the best mixture to keep the dirt from getting cloddy and clumpy when you rip it up and stuff? Keeps it from getting too chunky and keep from having to till it so much? Doesnt it also help with drainage too? lets the ground soak up and hold moisture better?

Is it a money thing? too expensive?

Arent there like tree services and gardening services that are always looking for places to dump materials?

Couldnt a compost sales business as part of your MX business plan help to support costs associated with running your entire operation....?

Can anybody tell I like dirtchip tracks?....

Re: Talking Dirt....

Scott Davis is planing on using woodchips at riverfront since he has a bunch of dead trees to get rid of. club moto also uses woodchips.

I'm trying to get woodchips for my track, but the tree timming service says they can't dump any cause someone complained that they dumped some without asking.

Re: Talking Dirt....

I noticed some straw in one of the corners at Argyle yesterday. It seemed to keep things in place better. It was kind of funny cleaning off my bike later...

I'm sure Kirk will chime in later but......Club-Moto has ALWAYS had wood chips. That's why it rut's up nicely. Of course when we "re-opened" in October we were left with having to completly re-build the track, but they're in there.

Don't even ask about sand.........just look at Hangtown a month after the AMA National, and try to locate the TONS AND TONS of sand they bring in....wind, bikes, erosion, rain....sand always dissapears.

Re: Talking Dirt....

When Shawn prepped the Metcalf MX track for his race, he mixed a TON of wood chips all over the track. So much that it was sucking power out the bikes, and some guys were getting sideways!

But man, it made some of the old, crappy corners much, much better.

I'll bet now, after a few weeks of working all the chips in, the track is about perfect (for Metcalf, that is).

I don't know why Shawn doesn't do that with his track at the fairgrounds? It could really use it. The dirt at SCMX looks really difficult to work with.

Re: Talking Dirt....

I can chime in on this regarding Club. Yes, Club wants to put in more woodchips... and is in fact, putting in woodchips all the time. We will continue to put in more over the coming months. If you actually walk the track, you can see the areas that get treated with woodchips. They eventually get absorbed into the soil, especially since we till it so much...so it's an ongoing process to keep putting them in. Go walk the track sometime, and you'll see them in there.

WHAT...you're NOT working tonight ! Lazy A**...lol

Thanks for "chiming"....another fact of woodchips being used at Club-Moto is when you wash your bike. They're still stuck between the knobbies. Please filter them, and return to Club-Moto.
