Re: Riverfront GP RACE VERY COOL!!
It was definitely one of the best races of the year. It's a shame that so few riders showed up, but that made it better for the rest of us. I was second out of six in my +40 Int race, but my team race didn't go as well. Our lead rider crashed and then cruised to the finish line, giving us a 2 minute butt-start (is that the opposite of head-start?), and then my other team member just wasn't running great lap times. We probably finished 15th out of 20.
The track was really fun. After the second turn we jumped off the edge of the bowl berm to head over to the kiddie sand track. After a loop thru there, we re-entered the big track on the other side of the berm. Then, at the back of the main track, we turned left to enter the new back track... in 5th gear! There was a really fast, easy step-up followed by a small, fast little double-kinda-thingy. Then a single jump, turn left into a triple that most people were doubling, left again, go around the most difficult rhythm section, hit a fun downhill double, turn 180 right and then hit the big step-up. It was pretty wet and slippery right there for much of the day, which of course made the jump even tougher. Then a nice sized 3rd or 4th gear double, a left 180 with some ruts, a run down a sandy, bumpy, knarly straight, 180 right into a fun 6 roller section. After going double, double, double you hit a single ski jump (I was launching it just for fun) and then a right hand sweeper that had some super silty berms on the outside. After a little turning table-top we worked our way back into the real outskirts of Riverfront. I've never been so far back there, we were riding in uncharted territory almost as far back as the driving range. After zig-zagging thru the mowed grass and sand, we had a fun 5th gear wide open run back towards the main track. I almost needed taller gearing on my YZ250... almost. We then re-entered the main track just one turn after where we left it. Good times.
The track was a little wet and slick for the start of each race, but really came in at about the half-way point. Thank God for tear-offs. I pulled the first one before the end of the first lap. After 40 minutes I was starting to get comfortable and was sad to see the checkered flag. Oh, and I'd like to kick the announcer right in the sack for playing country music ALL DAY. I was seriously not happy about that.
Our team was called the "Roost Magnets". The girl at sign-ups said "What's roost? How do you spell it?" Pretty funny.
