Re: Pismo beach ride
if you're just on the beach, then it should be fine. there are so many cars, trucks, trailers, quads, etc that the beach is fairly hard packed.

Re: Pismo beach ride
yea but who goes to pismo and doesnt hit the dunes? Paddle tire isnt mandatory but if you plan on doing a lot dune ridding its worth it.

Re: Pismo beach ride
My brother went there this year and is going again for a family trip. He said that riding the dunes was the most fun he had ever had off of a track, oh and by the way he had a paddle tire on. Have fun Nick!

Re: Pismo beach ride
Get a paddle and you will have the most fun you can have on a motorcycle that doesnt involve the opposite sex!
You can do it without a paddle but you will wish you had gotten one.
Dont forget the flag. You have to have one on your bike.
Also put duct tape on your shock springs to keep from sand blasting your shock shaft.
Nice to run filter skins also.

Re: Pismo beach ride
like most people have posted, a paddle tire is not nesesary. iv ridden my yz 125 with a paddle and without without any problems. i took my cr500 the last time i went with a paddle tire but i didn't even need it. the guys i go with have 250f and 450's with no paddle and we all get around fine. have fun and on the beach its 15MPH no exceptions. you get pulled over for messing around on the beach its a ticket on ur record i believe.

Re: Pismo beach ride
I've been to Pismo many many times. I've done it with and without paddles.
The best times I've had have been with paddles. Without a paddle tire,
you have to keep the throttle on a lot mor to get "on top" of the sand.
If the sand is wet it's not a problem, but in the summer it's dry and deep
and a paddle is the way to go.
A few more tips:
Set your suspension (rebound and compression) all the way in, as tight
as can be. It's like riding on dirt. And jump landings won't suck you into the
sand. I know it sounds wrong, but try it first with your normal settings then
once with the clickers all the way in. You won't go back.
Assume the entire bike will be buried in soft dry sand. Do whatever you can
to protect the engine.
Whenever you land from a jump, even a small one, DO NOT let off the gas.
Full throttle or endo city.
When riding east, away from the ocean, be VERY cautious. The dunes
drop off very quickly and are very hard to see where they drop off (amber
goggle lenses help with this). If you go blasting along you'll wake up in the
hospital. Trust me on this. Almost every broken bone I've seen at pismo
was due to this.
If you decide to start jumping a dune, have a spotter at the top. Tell the
spotter to not do anything if it's clear, and wave arms like mad if it's not
(usually from some bozo on a quad coming up the other side). Then just
keep an eye out for mad hand-waving, and hope it happens before you
get up the face of the dune.
Jet a bit richer. Your bike will run hot because you're going to be full
throttle a LOT (less so with a paddle). Going a bit richer helps. Not
totally necessary, but be ready for pinging.
For more fun, set up a sand MX track by marking a few spots to go
around. This is only really doable if it's not a busy day. Something like
"go over that dune, turn right, drop into that bowl, go over that hump,
come back..." After about 10 laps you'll be exhausted with a giant smile.
Lastly.... if you get sand in your throttle tube, DO NOT RIDE until you get
it out and the throttle works freely. I have 13 screws and a 6" rod in my
left ankle because I kept on riding.
Have fun!

Re: Pismo beach ride
John, thanks for all your info, by the way with the sand in the throttle, you got hurt because the throttle got stuck?
havent been to the dunes, never rode on sand except at Est when the beach section is run once in a while. If i stay mostly on the beach and on the flat areas of the dunes would i still need a flag? Where can i attach the flag to, i surely dont want to drill into my fender.
Is there a certain name of the beach where to go or is it "pismo beach" anywhere on the coast line? I want to launch my stand up jetski as well so id take my jetski trailer, is there a boat launch, if not id have to back up close to water and carry it in or something.
is this exactly where it is? pismo beach - Google Maps

Re: Pismo beach ride
I was only there once and it was over 10 years ago. All the advice is right on the mark. A paddle is the way to go as the sand can get pretty deep in areas. (You have to take the mud flag off or the paddle will take it off for you) I'm not sure how you will bolt the flag on but I've seen folks zip tie them to the silencer. However, they do make brackets to bolt them on the rear axle.
