Pismo Beach WORCS race

The 11th round of the WORCS series took place this past weekend at Pismo Beach and it was crazy!

The track was gnarly. And what was even worse, the pros could not walk the track on saturday in fear of them finding cheater lines. In the end that didn't really hurt them because and huge wind came up on saturday night and blew half of the track away.

The race took place on the beach and as expected, the sand took charge and took a few of the top racers down. Out of the 25 racers that started the race, only 14 finished. The first victim to the sand was championship contender Kurt Caselli of KTM. From what I heard in the pits, Caselli was going over one of the many sand dunes and over powered it and flew over the bars. Other racers who DNF'd were Charlie Mullins, Richie Owens, Brian Hulsey, Scott Simon, Bobby Bonds, Steven Hembree, Brenden Ritzman, Rory Sullivan, Lance Smail, and Jim Bryant. If they didnt fly over the bars, their bike either over heated and blew up, or the burned their clutch out.

Locals Tony Sherman, Bryan Olson, and David Gassin were there. Sherman and Olson didnt compete in the sunday main due to Sherman breaking the teeth on the outer clutch basket and Olson having and injury.

David Gassin had his best finish this season coming in 11th. His team finally put him on a bike that didn't blow up or break, but it was a stock tank so he had to pit about 4 times which cost him a few spots. He had an awesome start coming out in 5th for about 3/4 of the 1st lap until a sand dune took him as a victim. He held on though and took 11th.

Bobby Garrison had the wholeshot and took the early lead but Ricky Dietrich was never far behind. Bobby and Ricky switched positions many times and gained about a 5 minute lead over 3rd place Justin Soule.

Nathan Woods rode with a hand injury but still was a good contender for the race win. After being involved with a first turn pile up off the start, Woods worked his way up to 5th place where he stayed for most of the race and finished.

All in all it was a great race and so much fun to watch.

Here are the results:
Bobby Garrison
Ricky Dietrich
Justin Soule
Robby Bell
Nathan Woods
Destry Abbott
Ryan Reina
Matt Karlsen
Eric Rhoten
Dennis Stapleton
David Gassin
John Beal
Jeff Willow
Ty Davis

Top 6 finished 12 laps and the 7 through 14 completed 11 laps.

Taft is coming up in 2 weeks where the championship will be decided. Can't wait!!!!

Great report! I would've liked to see the central Cal. local - Nate Woods - do better. But under the circumstances (hand injury + course conditions) I guess he did quite well.

Carli... you should get a job at one of the mx rags or newspapers doing race reporting. That was as good or better than most articles covering races. thx 4 the report.

Carli....where DON'T you go for Moto activities ? You really put on some miles for the love of this sport !

Looks like another local boy...Dennis Stapleton made 10th place !

P.S. Is Ryan taking this "rest thing" well, while he heals ? Bet NOT !

Where are you going next ?

P.S. Want me to submit some of your writing to Davey and Scott at RacerX....just need your OK in writing, if they use any of them. If so, write me at mxdad100@yahoo.com

Yes, Ryan is taking the "rest" thing quite well and he's following his physical therapy instructions very well.

My schedule is Taft on Nov. 2-4 for the last round of WORCS and then two weeks after that is Las Vegas Nov 15-17 for the last Endurocross. Then I might be going to Last Man Standing but not quite sure yet.

And yes, Stapleton did awesome. Gassin was on him for a while but then took a nasty spill and lost some time.
